“Thanks to Esther’s editorial comments, not only did it improve the English, but also the readability of my paper!  Esther’s corrections and comments have been very helpful and have given me insights for following papers.  After submission of the edited manuscript to a journal, I was able to return it with minor revisions.  One referee proposed to publish it without any changes.  Compliments were “Well written” and “good article nearly finished.”  For my next English publication I will definitely turn to Esther before submitting.”

“I followed the writing course given by Dr. Chang in 2012 and I felt it was a revelation. I learned many things about writing a scientific article that would have been very helpful earlier in my Ph.D. research. Particularly the insights into structuring a paper, a paragraph and even sentences that I have gained are still very helpful to me. She is a very good teacher and has a very well developed feeling for writing eloquently in English. I highly recommend following the writing course!”

“The biggest compliment I can give is one I got after the course. Before the course I had written and submitted a paper, but the process of getting there had felt like a huge struggle. Version after version of the manuscript came back from my supervisors with lengthy comments.  During the course I wrote a manuscript based on what we learned and the comments of other course members.  The first version of this manuscript I showed my supervisors came back within a day saying: “The course has helped very well in producing a compact readable paper. Because of that I can review it quickly and have few comments on the English writing. Congratulations!”  I believe the setup of the course has helped a great deal to achieve this.  The overall editing of ‘finished manuscripts’ by Esther at the end of the course is a great bonus!”

“The writing course greatly improved my writing skills. Most importantly I learned that good writing is not magic, but can be done if one applies a couple of techniques. . . These tricks sound relatively simple, but I now apply them in every text I write and they make me more confident about my manuscripts. Additionally we learned a lot about how native speakers use the English language and by which mistakes done by non-native speakers it is easy to irritate reviewers. We also found out how it is to be a reviewer by giving feedback on the manuscript of other course participants. I found that this exercise made me more aware of my own mistakes while writing. To summarize I can only say that I found the course was very useful and would recommend it to every PhD-student in natural science with results ready at hand!”
